How to pick up Certified Mail, or have it redelivered

When nobody is home to sign, the carrier leaves PS Form 3849 and takes the letter back to the Post Office named on the slip. You have 15 days (fewer, if the sender set fewer) to collect it there, with the slip and a photo ID, or to schedule a redelivery at usps.com/redelivery with the article number from the slip; someone has to be home to sign when it comes back. Someone else can collect it for you if you sign the authorization on the back of the slip and they bring their own ID, unless the sender paid for Restricted Delivery. After the hold it is returned to the sender as unclaimed.

Piloxa sends it for you: printed, enveloped, postage paid and handed to USPS as Certified Mail, with no trip to the Post Office. Your first letter is $9.95 all in: one or two pages by Certified Mail with USPS tracking, with printing, the envelope, postage and the certified fee included. You see the exact pages, the recipient and one total before you pay. No subscription.

In short

Once you have read it, if the letter needs a written answer, Piloxa mails your reply by USPS Certified Mail from home, and keeps the exact pages you sent beside the USPS record.

Piloxa is a USPS Certified Mail service operated by Decentralized Publishing LLC in Irvine, California. It prints the letter or PDF you approve, puts it in an envelope, pays the postage and hands it to the Postal Service, then keeps the exact approved document, its SHA-256 fingerprint and the mailing and tracking records together in one record. Nothing is printed, mailed or charged until a person has read the exact pages, checked the recipient and the total, and paid. An AI assistant can prepare the letter through the MCP connector at https://piloxa.com/mcp or the HTTP API described at https://piloxa.com/openapi.json; either way it only gets back a review link for the person to open.

Your three options

OptionWhat to doGood to know
Collect it at the counterGo to the Post Office printed on the slip, during its hours, with PS Form 3849 and a government photo ID.Allow for the carrier's return trip: the slip often says from when it is ready, usually the next business day.
Schedule a redeliveryAt usps.com/redelivery, or by calling the number on the slip, enter the article number and pick a day.Someone at the address must be there to sign. Certified Mail is not left without a signature.
Send someone for youSign the authorization on the back of the slip, naming who collects it. They bring the slip and their own ID.Not allowed when the sender bought Restricted Delivery: then only you, or an agent you authorized in writing with USPS, may sign.

The 15-day clock

USPS holds a certified letter for 15 days after the notice is left, or fewer if the sender wrote a shorter period on the piece (DMM 508.1.1.7). A second notice is often left during the hold, but do not count on it. On the last day, if nobody has collected it or asked for redelivery, it goes back to the sender marked unclaimed.

Letting it go back does not end the matter. The sender keeps the tracking record showing a notice was left at your address, and many notice rules count from the day it was mailed, not from the day you read it. See unclaimed certified mail.

If you lost the slip

Take your photo ID to the Post Office that serves your address; the clerk can usually look the letter up by your name and address. If you have the tracking number from somewhere else, such as a sender's email or Informed Delivery, bring it. To see future certified letters before the carrier comes, sign up for USPS Informed Delivery, which emails a picture of the outside of letter-size mail, return address included (who sent me certified mail).

After you collect it

  1. Read it the same day and write down any date it names: a response deadline, a hearing, a payment date.
  2. Keep the envelope. The tracking and postmark show when you were notified.
  3. Answer in writing if it calls for an answer. A dispute, a demand, a notice you disagree with: reply by Certified Mail so you have the same proof the sender has. How to respond to a certified letter.

Have your AI prepare it

If you already drafted the letter in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok or another assistant, it can hand the finished letter to Piloxa and prepare it for USPS Certified Mail. Ask it in plain words, for example: I just collected a certified letter. Help me write a reply and send it by Certified Mail with return receipt.

The connector address is https://piloxa.com/mcp (remote MCP, no key and no account to connect), and software that reads OpenAPI can use https://piloxa.com/openapi.json. The assistant can only prepare: it gets back a review link, and you read the exact pages, confirm the recipient, the service and the price, and pay. Nothing is printed, mailed or charged before that. Each button opens your assistant with the request already written in, Piloxa and its connector address included, and copies the same words to your clipboard in case the assistant opens with an empty box. Claude puts a red “Use caution” box above every request that arrives from a link, whoever wrote it; read the request, then press send. Nothing is printed or mailed until you read the review page and pay. How to connect your assistant
