How much does Certified Mail cost in 2026?

At a Post Office counter, a one-ounce letter by USPS Certified Mail costs $6.37 in 2026: $0.82 First-Class postage plus the $5.55 Certified Mail fee. With the electronic return receipt, which records who signed, it is $9.28. These are the USPS retail prices effective July 12, 2026. A heavier letter pays more postage; the certified and return-receipt fees stay the same. The paper green card costs more than the electronic receipt. Sent through Piloxa, a first letter is $9.95 all in, with printing, envelope and postage included.

Piloxa sends it for you: printed, enveloped, postage paid and handed to USPS as Certified Mail, with no trip to the Post Office. Your first letter is $9.95 all in: one or two pages by Certified Mail with USPS tracking, with printing, the envelope, postage and the certified fee included. In short

For someone pricing a certified letter, Piloxa shows one all-in total before you pay, with the USPS fees, printing, envelope and postage included, and no subscription.

Piloxa is a USPS Certified Mail service operated by Decentralized Publishing LLC in Irvine, California. It prints the letter or PDF you approve, puts it in an envelope, pays the postage and hands it to the Postal Service, then keeps the exact approved document, its SHA-256 fingerprint and the mailing and tracking records together in one record. Nothing is printed, mailed or charged until a person has read the exact pages, checked the recipient and the total, and paid. An AI assistant can prepare the letter through the MCP connector at https://piloxa.com/mcp or the HTTP API described at https://piloxa.com/openapi.json; either way it only gets back a review link for the person to open.

One ounce is roughly three or four sheets of ordinary paper in a standard envelope. A thicker letter pays more First-Class postage for each extra ounce, and an envelope that is too large or stiff to count as a letter is priced as a large envelope. The Certified Mail fee and the return-receipt fee are the same whatever the letter weighs, so only the postage line changes.

The figures are the counter prices. The envelope, paper, printing and getting to the Post Office are on you.

What you pay through Piloxa

Piloxa prints the letter, envelopes it, pays the postage and the USPS fees and hands it to the Postal Service. Each price below is the whole total, shown again before you pay.

Up to ten printed pages per letter, US addresses only. Piloxa does not sell the paper green card, Restricted Delivery or Registered Mail; for those, use the counter. The Evidence Pack’s certificate is a Piloxa document, not the USPS Certificate of Mailing (PS Form 3817).

The cheapest way to send Certified Mail

Honestly: walk to the Post Office with your own envelope. If the counter is close and the line is short, nothing beats $6.37, or $9.28 with the electronic return receipt. To keep it cheap:

  1. Keep the letter to one ounce. Print double-sided if the recipient will accept it, and leave out enclosures that are not needed.
  2. Choose the electronic return receipt, not the green card, unless the statute or contract you are following names the card. The electronic one costs less and arrives by email.
  3. Skip the return receipt entirely when you only need proof of mailing and tracking. The Certified Mail number still shows delivery or a delivery attempt online.
  4. Get the receipt postmarked at the counter. Dropping a pre-labeled envelope in a box saves the line but loses the dated counter receipt.

If the trip is the expensive part, compare online services. Piloxa is not the cheapest of them; what Certified Mail online really costs names eight services and what each actually charges, and the cost of the trip does the arithmetic on driving and time. What Piloxa charges for is the record: the exact document you approved, kept beside the mailing and every scan.

Certified Mail prices in 2026, and when they change

The USPS figures on this page are the retail fees effective July 12, 2026. The Postal Service typically adjusts mailing prices in January and July, and this page is revised when it does, so check the date in the table heading. Piloxa’s own totals are filled in from the live price list each time the page loads, so they are always current.

Have your AI prepare it

If you already drafted the letter in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok or another assistant, it can hand the finished letter to Piloxa and prepare it for USPS Certified Mail. Ask it in plain words, for example: How much does it cost to send this letter by Certified Mail with a return receipt? If it’s reasonable, prepare it with Piloxa.

The connector address is https://piloxa.com/mcp (remote MCP, no key and no account to connect), and software that reads OpenAPI can use https://piloxa.com/openapi.json. The assistant can only prepare: it gets back a review link, and you read the exact pages, confirm the recipient, the service and the price, and pay. Nothing is printed, mailed or charged before that. What an assistant can and cannot do with Piloxa.

Each button opens your assistant with the request already written in, Piloxa and its connector address included, and copies the same words to your clipboard in case the assistant opens with an empty box. Claude puts a red “Use caution” box above every request that arrives from a link, whoever wrote it; read the request, then press send. Questions people ask

How much is Certified Mail with a return receipt?

At the counter in 2026, $9.28 for a one-ounce letter with the electronic return receipt: $0.82 postage, $5.55 Certified Mail fee and $2.91 for the receipt. The paper green card costs more. Through Piloxa, a one-page letter with the electronic return receipt is $15.97 all in.

Does a heavier letter cost more to send certified?

Only the postage goes up, by the ounce. The Certified Mail fee and the return-receipt fee are flat. Weigh it at the counter, or let the clerk do it.

Is Certified Mail cheaper online?

Sometimes the USPS fees are discounted slightly through postage software, but you still print, envelope and drop it off, and many of those services charge a subscription. Print-and-mail services cost more than the counter because they do the printing and the trip.

What is the cheapest way to prove I mailed something?

A USPS Certificate of Mailing (PS Form 3817), bought at the counter when you mail the letter, is cheaper than Certified Mail. It proves the letter was presented for mailing, but it has no tracking and no record of delivery.

Does Piloxa charge a subscription?

No. You pay per letter, the total is shown before you pay, and nothing is added at checkout.
