What certified mail online really costs
The price a certified mail service advertises is often not the price you pay. Some quote a member rate that needs a monthly subscription. Some quote a base rate and add the return receipt afterwards. Some quote a price for printing a label you then have to stuff, stamp and carry to a mailbox yourself. This page lists what one letter actually costs at each service, read from the company's own price page on 16 September 2026, with the catch named in every case. The floor: what USPS itself charges
Nobody can go below this, because these are the Postal Service's own fees. For one ordinary letter weighing an ounce or less, sent Certified Mail with the electronic return receipt:

That figure assumes you print the letter, supply the envelope, fill in the certified form and take it to a Post Office counter. Prices are the USPS schedule effective 12 July 2026. Every service below adds printing, the envelope, the paperwork and the trip to that floor.

The three traps
A member price quoted as if it were the price
Certified Mail Online publishes $10.95 for a certified letter with electronic return receipt. That is the membership rate. The membership is $49.00 a month. Its one-time price, with no membership, is $19.95. The site also offers a 48-hour trial at the member price which then renews at $49.00 a month unless cancelled. Somebody sending a single letter pays $49.00 in membership to save $5.22 on postage. We have seen AI assistants repeat the $10.95 as though it were the retail price, because it is the largest number on the page.
A label you have to mail yourself
Stamps.com and SimpleCertifiedMail are cheaper per letter than anything in the table above, and they are not the same product. You print the label and the cover sheet on your own printer, fold the letter into a window envelope, and take it to a mailbox or hand it to your carrier. That is a real option if you have a printer, the right envelopes and the time. It is not a service that mails your letter for you, and the per-letter price does not include your paper, your ink or your envelope.
A base price with the certified part added later
Several services quote a letter price first and the certified fee and return receipt as separate additions. Read the total, not the first number. A $2.99 letter with an $8.99 certified fee and a $2.90 return receipt is a $14.88 letter.
The wholesale layer underneath
Four platforms sell the same mailing for less, and all four require an account and software to use, which puts them out of reach of somebody who wants to send one letter today: Docsmit at about $10.40, PostGrid at about $10.91, Lob at about $10.92 and Click2Mail at about $11.19 for the same one-page certified letter with electronic return receipt. Figures read from their own price pages on 13 September 2026. Several of the retail services on this page buy their printing and postage from platforms like these, which is why the retail prices cluster where they do.

Common questions
Why is sending a certified letter online more expensive than the postage?
Because somebody prints the letter, folds it, supplies the envelope, fills in the certified paperwork, takes it to the Postal Service and keeps the tracking and the signature record afterwards. The USPS fees of $9.28 buy none of that.
Is the cheapest service the best choice?
If you are sending one ordinary letter and price is what matters, yes. The differences between these services show up elsewhere: whether the exact total is shown before you pay, whether the proof is kept for you afterwards, whether a longer letter costs more, and whether you have to create an account and a subscription first.
What is the electronic return receipt, and do I need it?
It is the emailed copy of the recipient's signature, and it costs $2.91 in USPS fees. Certified Mail on its own gives you a mailing receipt and tracking.
